Sailors Watch
Sailboats are a common sight around Daufuskie as sea-going adventurers are enticed by some of the best harbors and surrounding waters for year round sailing. Average air temperatures range from 59˚ in January to 89˚ in July with ocean temperatures averaging between 52˚ and 84˚. Mariners navigating the waters have to be aware of winds, tides, and of course, mermaids!

Calibogue
(cal • uh • bow • gee)
Calibogue Sound, an Indian name meaning “Sweet Water,” borders Daufuskie Island on the east. The island is bordered on the north by the Cooper River, the south by Mongin Creek, and by New River on the west. According to local mermaid mythology, sailors who passed through the area on ships at night were often lured into the waters by the captivating songs of beautiful mermaids. Once in the water, the mermaids disappeared.

Summer House
Daufuskie’s population swells in the summer as part-timers move into their island homes. Before the advent of airconditioning, people moved to the shore in the hot months to escape the heat. Today, they enjoy cool island breezes from gracious front porches. From their homes, some can hear the sounds of the ocean and even,
perhaps, the alluring call of the mermaid’s song.

Sirena
Mermaids have captured the imaginations of people around the world, and every country has its own mythology surrounding this intriguing aquatic creature. In the southern European country of Maltese, for example, sirens and mermaids have the same description and are known as Sirena. So, keep your eyes open…you never know when an enchanting mermaid might captivate you!

Shell Beach

Daufuskie’s beaches are a favorite for sun-seekers and shell collectors. Depending

on the time of year, treasure hunters can find conch shells, starfish, sand dollars, horseshoe crabs, and other fascinating sea creatures. According to local legend, you might even f ind mermaids sunning themselves in the light of the moon.

A Little Summer Pick Me Up

The un-spring like weather we are having in New England has called for a cheerful change of scenery in the store this week. With my favorite color scheme of blues, I created a look of navy and sea glass Bella Notte Linens mixed with white and natural linen in addition to the bright and sunny selection of Dash and Albert Rugs. With elements of turquoise, cobalt, and mercury glass, we are feeling a bit more in the mood for summer.

Our Corsican bed dressed with Dawson duvet and shams, and Homespun coverlet and shams, by Bella Notte Linens.

I Love these vintage candlestick prints from Richard Parkman, his work is so unique.

Guildmaster's, French Three Drawer Chest and Sea Horse and Octopus art in Navy adorn the walls.

Lollia, Wish hand cream and perfume are surrounded by Root Candles in Oceana and Enchanted Twilight.

I used some antique shutters in the best turquoise ever to flank our vintage white bakers rack.

This bakers rack, while very heavy to move, has traveled throughout the store as home for displaying everything from our favorite bath and body lines to bed linens and gifts.

Lollia Calm, and Bella Notte Shams in Adele and Linen Crochet. Matteo Tat on the bottom in coal.

Seeded glass lamps and distressed wooden lanterns a top a Justin Camlin console. I accented with some old cobalt bottles and light blue bottles we picked up from our trip to Paris last week. See my personal blog. The Garden of Simple, for great picture from the Paris flea market.

This gorgeous line of printed cotton sateen and linen/cotton blends is something I never stop thinking about. On our quest for a funky and different printed bedding line, I always come back to Ferran New York.

Umbria collection is printed and embroidered on 100% linen with 300 thread count percale sheets to coordinate, comes in Blue and Poppy.

This is the print that started it all for me, I love the medallion on white background, and it is sooooo soft!!! These colors are from the Reef Collection

The Persia Collection also has the beautiful medallion in smoky blues and greys and the pops of green create a look of simple yet makes a statement

Girly has bright colors of summer, and reminds me of my summer wardrobe as a young girl.

Earthworks combines my favorite of blues and browns together in a modern twist of classic vines.

Perhaps Ferran will makes its way to our store someday soon!!
